Vice President of Finance and Internal Operations

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced, highly capable, and innovative Vice President of Finance and Internal Operations to oversee the planning, organization, and direction of Kids Alive’s financial and accounting functions, internal operations, and human resources. The successful candidate will be an accomplished, inspirational leader who will manage key operational functions, think and plan strategically, and champion our organization’s culture and Christian ethos. This role will be based in our International Office in Valparaiso, IN, will report to the President, and will be part of the Senior Executive Team.


Position Responsibilities

Strategy, Vision and Leadership

  • Advise the President and the Senior Executive Team on matters related to financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, and policy matters

  • Effectively communicate and present critical financial reports and other matters at select Board and audit committee meetings

  • Contribute to the development of Kids Alive International’s strategic goals and objectives, as well as management plans for the organization, in line with mission, vision, and core values

  • Recommend necessary changes to operating models and strategy due to emerging trends, issues, and government regulations

  • Maintain ongoing, healthy lines of communication, keeping the President informed of all critical issues

  • Represent the organization externally, as necessary, particularly related to discussions about banking, HR, and other internal operations matters

  • Support Kids Alive’s country leaders and programs, as appropriate, in developing robust and healthy finance, HR, and administrative systems and processes

  • Build upon and improve financial and operational systems that will support the organization as it grows and scales

Talent Development

  • Promote a culture of high performance, accountability, and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to excellence

  • Oversee the work of the accounting team, HR, and administrative staff

  • Ensure staff members receive timely and appropriate training and development

  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, and coordinate annual performance appraisal processes

  • Provide guidance, as appropriate, to country leaders and programs on the development of HR processes, including policies, training, and performance management

  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach: assign accountabilities; set objectives; establish priorities; monitor and evaluate results

  • Provide guidance and support to managers in efforts to recruit, hire, and orient new staff; make hiring/firing recommendations

  • Oversee the implementation of benefit plans (medical insurance, retirement, etc.) for all US and overseas employees, ensuring compliance with US and IN employment laws and best practices

  • Actively participate in and contribute to individual and corporate times of prayer, devotionals, and times of worship

Internal Operations

  • Upgrade and implement an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, accounting standards, procedures, and accountability that align with Kids Alive’s overall strategies

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute the annual budget process and monthly/quarterly/annual reporting, ensuring integrity and accuracy

  • Assist external auditors to prepare for and successfully complete the annual audit in collaboration with the President and board audit committee; resolve any areas of concern that are raised

  • Oversee fiscal risk management, both in the short and long term; anticipate and correct potential problems in advance

  • Assist the President and Senior Executive Team to ensure that Kids Alive International is adhering to its strategic plan

  • Provide analytical support to Kids Alive’s leadership staff including development of internal management reporting capabilities

  • Improve administrative and operational accounting services such as payroll, accounts payable, and purchasing

  • Assist in the protection of the organization by ensuring it is legally protected and ensuring compliance with all applicable nonprofit laws and policies as well as ECFA guidelines and other regulatory requirements

  • Maintain oversight to ensure the effective management and maintenance of KAI’s facilities

  • Ensure that appropriate insurance policies (for relevant buildings and facilities, D&O liabilities, crime, travel, auto) are in place


  • Business or accounting degree

  • CPA preferred

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a senior management role, preferably in the nonprofit world; must be familiar with nonprofit finance and accounting regulations

  • Proven track record of success facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization

  • Understanding and appreciation of the challenges of working globally, respecting the diversity of our people and cultures

  • Ability to travel internationally 2-3 times a year

  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution

  • Strong mentoring, coaching experience to a team with diverse levels of expertise

  • Entrepreneurial team player who can multi-task

  • Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers

  • Self-reliant, good problem solver, and results-oriented

  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical finance and administration initiatives

  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and ability to effectively interface with senior management, Kids Alive’s Board of Directors, and staff

  • Ability to operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker

  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office suite, databases, etc.
