Position Overview:          

Within the context of Lifewater’s Vision of a Healthy Village (VHV) program strategy, the WASH Engineer serves to improve Water and Sanitation operational excellence, technical implementation, and long-term maintenance and sustainability of these hardware systems. The WASH Engineer does this through oversight and review of technical water and sanitation programming in their country of assignment which will improve the health and well-being of vulnerable children and families in targeted program regions. This position will support the national and field offices in their efficient and effective execution of the VHV including the operational review and field support of engineering designs/strategies, performance, maintenance, sustainability, monitoring, and evaluation tools related to hardware. They will also do this through the support of special projects within the department.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief of WASH Engineering, the WASH Engineer will serve as an invaluable member of the Global Programs Team. Your primary areas of responsibility are: 

  • Provide technical day-to-day support, quality assurance, and monitoring for assigned Lifewater programs ensuring the technical quality of the work and increasing the capacity of hardware staff.

  • Lead the national and field offices in detailed hardware planning, review, and tracking of planned versus actual activities for programs, using standard tools and live data from Akvo system.

  • Provide detailed review of hardware drawings and contracts.

  • Detailed review of hardware projects submitted using Akvo data forms, ensuring reconciliation of all data issues within a timely manner.

  • Provide oversight of hardware activities, including well drilling, spring protection, school rain tanks, and school latrines by performing site visits, reviewing submitted data, and contributing at regular support meetings with the field WASH Technicians and field leadership.

  • Participate in bi-weekly and quarterly status meetings with HQ and field staff, and lead technical updates for all meetings.

  • Perform site visits to assigned programs to review hardware installations and support hardware planning in order to provide coaching and capacity building of field WASH Technicians.

  • Support the development and roll-out of special projects within the department in order to bring excellence to all hardware installations.

  • Provide technical expertise in locally appropriate WASH technological developments, such as enhancements to equipment, strategies, and program quality.

  • Support in the drafting and updating of technical drawings (using AutoCAD) coming from the field for multi-door latrine blocks, spring improvements, hand-dug wells, drilled wells, and rainwater catchment systems.

  • Support the development, documentation, and dissemination of new systems, standards, guidelines, manuals, and trainings to build capacity of local staff.

  • Support regular department processes including ordering water quality supplies, mapping of water points and related data using ArcGIS, preparing standard reports, and providing technical support as needed.

Qualifications

Required

  • Must be willing to accept and adhere to Lifewater’s Statement of Faith, and be actively involved in local church.

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, hydrogeology, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience with WASH programs in multiple contexts.

  • Demonstrated experience in working closely within a team, collaboration, or group to analyze and implement WASH programs in local community settings.

  • Proven ability in cross-cultural capacity building including training.

  • Knowledge of appropriate technology, water quality, WASH industry, and best practices in Christian community development.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish strong relationships cross culturally.

  • Detailed knowledge of current approaches to design and construction of small scale community water and sanitation facilities with experience in assessing water, sanitation and hygiene promotion at the grass-roots level.

  • Ability to travel to Lifewater field locations for up to two weeks at a time (4-6 times/year)

  • Ability to work and live in harsh situations with limited support and facilities.

  • Microsoft Office Suite, Google Apps Suite

  • Expertise in AutoCAD 

Preferred

  • Expertise in Akvo Flow software, ArcGIS mapping
