Job Synopsis

The purpose of the MCC East Coast Peace and Practice Coordinator is to realize a ministry action rooted in Anabaptism for practical, biblical peace and practice work. This is done in cooperation with constituent churches and conferences through networking and providing peace education, advocacy resources, program development, and engagement opportunities that are framed in MCC’s mission which envision communities in right relationship with God, one another, and creation. The Peace and Practice Coordinator engages with the constituency and provides leadership to East Coast (EC) personnel in these efforts.

Essential:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in peace and justice, political science, education, or related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of degree. 
  • 1-3 years of experience facilitating trainings or teaching. 
  • 1-3 years of experience in peace education, immigration, and/or program development.  
  • Demonstrated understanding of Anabaptist perspectives and diverse constituent groups. 
  • Theological understanding of peace and justice. 
  • Willingness to engage in open and loving dialogue on sensitive issues with people from diverse backgrounds.  
  • Skills in public speaking. 
  • English language fluency.  
  • Skills in written and spoken communication around sensitive issues.  
  • Skills in listening to varying constituent opinions around sensitive issues.  
  • Strong organizational skills. 
  • Self-care skills. 

Employment eligibility: Legally eligible to work in the U.S. MCC offers of employment are subject to a successful criminal background check(s). 

Preferred: 

  • 3-5 years of experience working in urban and constituency-related ministries. 
  • Spanish proficiency. 
  • Seminary degree.

Key Responsibilities

Specific Tasks and Duties: 

Peace and Practice Education (50%)  

  1. This role will collaborate as a core member of the MCC EC Management Team, including regional strategic planning and providing bi-monthly peace practice engagement opportunities for the management team.  This role will resource other managers with tools and resources for their teams.    
  2. Coordinate activities that articulate the vision of a holistic, biblical, Anabaptist vision of peace and practice ministry to staff, board, conferences, and churches of MCC East Coast. 
  3.  Develop educational materials and presentations related to the priority Peace and Practice. This includes public speaking, education and training presentations. 
  4. Work with other MCC EC and MCC U.S. staff to develop resource materials for peace and justice education around shared priority areas (peacebuilding, uprooted and vulnerable people, and climate/creation care). Develop and conduct training to equip East Coast staff in using these materials for constituency education from their program platforms.  
  5. Lead Regional Anti-Oppression committee, helping coordinate agenda and vision for the work of the team. Guide, support and at times facilitate meetings and anti-oppression efforts.  
  6. Liaise with other anti-oppression efforts within the MCC system, for purposes of sharing information and collaboration.  
  7. Serve as staff liaison to the MCC-EC Board Anti-Oppression Team.  
  8. Dismantle oppression and serve the needs of a broad range of people and church structures, including MCC EC staff and board, constituent conferences, associate groups, mission agencies, educational institutions, and congregations. 
  9. Develop meaningful internship opportunities for East Coast programming. 

 

Networking (40%)  

  1. Contact MCC EC constituents, partners, schools, board, and colleagues about peace and practice initiatives. 
  2. Manage the development of program plans, budget, common vision, and accountability for the MCC East Coast Peace and Practice work.  
  3. Coordinate EC staff in providing peace-related presentations and resources to congregations and school groups throughout the region.  
  4. Coordinate discernment of and response to common peace, justice, immigration, and climate/creation care priorities from East Coast program platforms. Network with the EC Program Coordinators, MCC-wide contact persons and leaders in developing and rolling-out new ministries and models.  
  5. Represent MCC East Coast on the MCC U.S. Peace and Justice Network. 
  6. Build and maintain strong relationships with constituent/conference peace and justice groups through resourcing and accompaniment including reaching out to conferences not as well-structured in the area of peace and justice.  
  7. Ensure region-wide connections to Peace & Practice initiatives. Serve as the primary liaison for broad regional exposure of initiatives in a given geographical area in the region so that learnings from that particular initiative can also be shared within the entire region. 
  8. Liaise with the National Peace and Justice Ministries of MCC.  

 

Administration 10% 

  1. Supervise and support interns.  
  2. Plan and maintain a budget. 
  3. Submit timely reports.  

 

Other duties as assigned on a temporary basis 

Supervision: This role will supervise interns.   

Travel expectations: Travel up to 30%, some local, long days and some nights away. 

Physical Activity/Demands:  

  • ​​Constantly​ remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.  
  • ​​Occasionally​ moving about to accomplish tasks or move from one worksite to another.  
  • ​​Occasionally​ assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned. 
  • This role is not regularly exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Salary Details

Base salary: $57,543.33. Starting salary may be adjusted up to $63,937.04 based on previous experience.

Medical, dental and vision, 23 days paid vacation, sick time and 10 holidays/year. Life insurance provided, as well as long and short term disability coverage. The retirement plan, with MCC contribution of 7%, begins after six months of employment.
